to evolve through education
to grow, learn and develop as an organisation
and authenticity are at the core of SIRPA’s ethos
SIRPA’s Mission & Values
SIRPA’s mission is to engage health professionals and people in pain to train them in the SIRPA approach to chronic pain recovery, equipping them with practical competencies necessary to shift from living with pain to living without it.
Chronic pain is now the leading cause of disability, affecting 20 – 30% of the global population. By cultivating a community of ambassadors for the emerging curative paradigm, SIRPA aims to dramatically reduce human suffering in the world.
Founder of SIRPA
Georgie Oldfield MCSP
The idea for SIRPA™ (Stress Illness Recovery Practitioners’ Association) was developed in early 2010 by UK Chartered Physiotherapist, Georgie Oldfield.
Georgie had come across the pioneering work of John E Sarno MD in early 2007 after spending years trying to answer all the inconsistencies she was regularly noticing between the symptoms her patients presented with and their diagnoses. Reading Dr Sarno’s first book about the condition he called, Tension Myoneural Syndrome (TMS), produced an epiphany moment for Georgie as everything fell into place and she realised she now had an answer to all her questions.
After researching the concept as much as she could herself, she realised that in order to develop this work within her own professional work she needed to learn from the man himself. In November 2007 Georgie went over to New York to spend some time with Dr Sarno and following this developed her own patient programme and her first educational product for patients, the TMS Recovery DVD.
In the years following this she has developed strong links with other Specialists working in this field in the United States and has returned to the States for conferences aimed at raising the profile of this concept amongst not only Health Professionals, but the public.
Georgie meanwhile continues to expand her own expertise in the field and she is absolutely passionate about developing awareness of this work in the UK and Europe. SIRPA™ came about due to Georgie’s determination to provide an easier way for other Health Professionals to develop a working knowledge of this work than to go down the route she herself had to follow.
In 2014 Georgie wrote her own book, ‘Chronic Pain: Your Key to Recovery‘, in 2015 and 2017 she organised and hosted two conferences at the Royal Society of Medicine in London and over the years has spoken widely about this concept and approach at conferences and courses, as well as on radio and TV.
The SIRPA™ Recovery Programme
After setting up SIRPA™, Georgie renamed the TMS Recovery Programme for patients and it became the SIRPA™ Online Recovery Programme. This is now available as an online programme for patients to work through by themselves, or with the support and guidance of Georgie, or one of the health professionals who has undertaken the SIRPA™ Training.
The SIRPA™ Practitioner Training Programme
In 2010 Georgie created her SIRPA Training Course for health professionals interested in integrating this approach into their own work. In 2018 she updated this training and developed the online SIRPA Practitioner trianing. This full development programme educates and supports health professionals as they learn to support their clients on their own recovery journeys.

Dr Adam Al-Kashi PhD
Through a journey of personal and professional challenges, it soon became clear that symptom suppression bore little relation to health in its fullest sense. This began an exploration of means through which the mind and body could be enabled, rather than suppressed. There is a certain liberation that accompanies the venture ‘off-road’ but without a comprehensive map it can become a series of fruitless excursions.
Drawing on a decade of personal scholarship in the field of human development, Adam came to map the core distinctions underlying our abundance of often contradictory health practices. He saw that many approaches to health are not merely alternatives or complements to convention, but successors in a natural developmental sequence, offering new horizons through more embracive stages of ‘health engagement’.
Adam has been supporting SIRPA since first coming across Georgie and her work in 2012 and officially took on the position of SIRPA’s research adviser in 2014.
