The Cold Was Never the Problem: My Mind-Body Breakthrough

Over the past year of working with Irralee, I’ve come to understand that true healing happens when there’s an open, compassionate dialogue between the mind and body—one anchored in messages of safety.

Migraines had been part of my life since my teenage years, something I came to accept as an unavoidable neurological weakness. I believed the long list of triggers—chocolate, cheese, wine, even laughing or crying too much—and over time, I resigned myself to them. I never questioned why they happened; instead, I focused on managing them with as little disruption to my life as possible.

Then, in my mid-sixties, Raynaud’s appeared. Unlike migraines, which could last for hours or days, Raynaud’s episodes barely lasted a minute or two. And yet, despite their fleeting nature, I couldn’t ignore them. The sight of my fingers turning stark white, the creeping sense of frailty—it struck something deep within me, stirring an unease I couldn’t shake.

Even though Raynaud’s wasn’t painful, it consumed my attention. I would rub my fingers desperately, hit them against surfaces to restore circulation, overdress, and avoid any situation that might bring it on. But more than anything, it unleashed an unmistakable sense of rage. It wasn’t just frustration; it was visceral, almost primal. Each time my fingers turned white, it felt like an attack—on my body, my sense of control, and the image of myself as strong and capable.

A Turning Point

That’s when I came across a blog post where Irralee shared her experience with Raynaud’s. I followed her story, hoping to replicate her success, but my symptoms only intensified. Desperate for answers, I booked a session with Georgie through SIRPA, who suggested working with Irralee directly.

From the start, our sessions were challenging. I had long made peace with many of my childhood traumas—or so I thought. I believed that since I wasn’t actively dwelling on them, they weren’t affecting me. But I hadn’t realized that while I had learned to cope, I had never fully processed or released them in a healthy way.

Irralee encouraged me to start journaling, not just to record my thoughts but to observe my patterns with curiosity rather than judgment. At first, I resisted. I saw it as a pointless rehashing of old memories, forcing me to relive pain without resolution. What I didn’t realize was that it could be a tool—not to dwell on the past, but to make peace with it, release its grip, and uncover how even painful experiences had shaped me in meaningful ways.

Then, through these exercises, an unexpected memory surfaced—one I hadn’t connected to my symptoms before.

A Childhood Imprint

I was five years old when I had an extremely high fever from measles. The treatment? Ice baths. Several times a day, I was plunged into freezing water in an attempt to bring my temperature down.

For decades, I had dismissed this experience as something that simply happened. But suddenly, I saw it differently. Could my nervous system have registered cold as a life-threatening experience? Had my body learned to associate it with helplessness and survival?

This realization changed everything. The rage, the hyper-vigilance, the feeling that my body was betraying me—it all made sense. My Raynaud’s wasn’t random; it was my body reliving an old trauma, trying to protect me from something long past.

Rewiring the Fear Response

Qigong had always been an effective tool for me, integrating movement, breathwork, and intention in a way that felt natural and grounding. But I began to ask myself: How could I use intention more effectively to interrupt the specific thinking patterns that were keeping me stuck?

That’s when I started working with mantras—not just as words, but as anchors for my practice, a way to change the script in my mind while moving through breath and motion. By pairing a mantra with movement, I could redirect my thoughts in real time, shifting my body’s response from fear to safety.

This practice became especially powerful after an emotionally charged journaling session, when old patterns surfaced and my nervous system felt vulnerable. Instead of getting lost in the emotion, I would bring it into my practice, reinforcing a new, intentional message through both movement and words.

Over time, I developed a simple but powerful rhythm for restoring balance:

  • Journaling to release emotional patterns
  • Mantras to rewrite unconscious fear-based thoughts
  • Qigong as meditation to integrate movement, breath, and intention

By aligning my practice with clear intention, I wasn’t just managing symptoms—I was retraining my mind and body to respond differently.

The Role of Irralee in My Healing

None of this healing happened in isolation. Working with Irralee was a turning point in my journey. She helped me understand that my body wasn’t malfunctioning—it was communicating. Through her compassionate guidance, I was able to shift old survival patterns, uncover the hidden layers behind my symptoms, and create messages of safety that changed my relationship with my body.

Thanks to her support, my Raynaud’s episodes have significantly decreased, my migraines are far less intense, and—perhaps most importantly—I feel more at ease in my own skin. For anyone seeking deep, lasting healing, I can’t recommend her enough.

This journey has transformed how I relate to my body. I no longer see it as something unpredictable or faulty, but as a wise communicator—one I am finally learning to listen to.

After discovering that her Raynaud’s and migraines were rooted in old fear responses rather than cold itself, she worked with Irralee to process childhood trauma, rewire her nervous system, and rebuild a compassionate mind‑body connection—leading to far fewer symptoms and a renewed sense of ease in her body.
